Read or listen to this post – your choice! 🙌
One of the most common objections I hear when speaking with mums about creating leveraged income streams is this:
Oh I couldn't do that, I'm not techie/clever/confident/organised enough etc. etc…
Or something similar, along the same lines of ‘for some reason, I'm not capable of doing that'.
Well I'd like to blow that out of the water, actually.
Because creating leveraged income streams could be the key to your financial freedom in motherhood, I want to get you well past this first obstacle!
And, because you are capable of anything. We are ALL capable of something, and today I’m going to dive in to some really important points, that lead inevitably to you making more money and experiencing more happiness in your life:
- Why being happy is so utterly essential to your existence in this world
- Why having enough money is JUST AS important
- And, why ‘you can do anything’ is not cliche – it is true.
So if you’re ready for some MAJOR inspiration, and to have a fire lit under your belly – grab a cup of tea and settle in, because we’re going to have a very important chat.
#1: Why being happy is so utterly essential to your existence in this world
You’re here (as in, here on this blog) because you know there’s more to life, and you want to experience it. Of course you do. We all want to experience all that life has to offer. You want to experience as much happiness as you can.
But you also know that you need more money to do that!
When you don’t have enough money, you’re constantly trying to get more of it, or find ways to make what you have last longer. Your head is filled with thoughts about money (or the lack of it), and you simply don’t have enough of what you need.
Have you experienced any of these situations?
- Your nutrition is lacking because your food choices are more driven by cost than by what your body really needs
- Your home is too small, or just not what you need for your growing family but you can't afford to upsize
- Your safety is compromised because you travel in a car with a lower safety rating than you'd like.
These are all basic human needs – food, shelter, safety. Remember Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs? The type of needs I’ve mentioned above are all at the bottom of the hierarchy. When needs at the bottom of the hierarchy are not met adequately, we focus constantly on meeting them. It’s basic survival.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
As is the nature of hierarchies, the stuff at the top can’t really exist with stability until the bottom of the hierarchy is firmly taken care of. It’s unlikely that you’ll be thinking about stuff like ‘how can I deepen my friendship with so and so’ if you don’t know where your next meal is coming from. Priorities.
It doesn’t take much of a stretch of the imagination to see where happiness exists on that model.
The more of your needs that are met, the happier and more content you will be.
And, the more of your needs that are met, the closer you get to self actualisation (at the top of the pyramid).
To me, experiencing self actualisation equates to making a greater contribution to the world.
Firstly, because you are vibrating at a much higher frequency, and positively influencing the vibration of those around you.
Secondly, because you can spend more time thinking about the stuff at the top of the pyramid e.g. ‘how can I help/serve others’ and less worrying about your basic needs.
The more of your basic needs are met, the more you can positively contribute to the world. But you need to have enough money to meet those needs.
Think about, I dunno, Oprah Winfrey. She contributes a great deal to the lives of others – spreading inspiration and hope to those who need it (raising the collective vibe of the world), and she has a school for girls that she created to ‘provide educational and leadership opportunities for academically gifted girls from impoverished backgrounds in South Africa who exhibited leadership qualities for making a difference in the world’.
How’s that for a contribution.
But Oprah is a wealthy woman. She doesn’t waste valuable headspace worrying about how to pay the mortgage, feed her kids, or how she’s going to afford a Molemap so that she can keep herself safe from melanoma.
Because of her wealth, many of her basic needs are met and she’s able to spend the that time thinking about how she is going to help and serve others.
So, your happiness is essential in order for you contribute the most you can, back to the world.
On a more immediate level – YOUR happiness as a mother is essential for you to be able to contribute the most you can to your family.
This quickly brings us to my second point – that having money is just as important as being happy.
#2: Why having enough money is JUST AS important as being happy
You know the saying “money can’t buy happiness”.
Sure. I agree. But it can go a long way to ensuring your basic needs are met, so that you have a better chance at rising to the top of the Hierarchy of Needs!
In our capitalist society, money is an enabler. We trade it for goods and services. The more you have, the more you can trade – simple economics.
Let me ask you this:
Why do you want more money?
I'll hazard a guess that you probably want it to meet some of the needs lower down on the hierarchy. (Unless I'm totally wrong and a super-wealthy person who has all their needs met, is reading The Leveraged Mama blog for inspiration!)
In order to be the happiest that you can be and thus, contribute as much back to the world that you’re capable of, you need money.
Your pursuit of money isn’t selfish, it’s noble. You’re just trying to be the very best that you can be. You're just trying to be the best mum you can be.
A lack of money can cause us a great deal of stress. When your decisions must be driven by money and not by what is the right thing to do, then your life can go down an unintended path – one that makes it difficult to be happy.
Take my pregnancy. After many years of trying, my husband and I resorted to IVF in order to become pregnant. This was a difficult time in our lives as it coincided with some fairly serious events in my family. Then, I was made redundant while pregnant and then we got into a whole heap of debt.
Combined, these events blew away the last of my resilience and I ended up with post natal depression, in the months after my daughter was born.
The right thing to do was to stay at home with my daughter. To rest and recuperate and recover from the months of emotional and physical exhaustion. But because of the debt that we had amassed, you already know what happened next… I needed to go back to work – regardless of the state I was in.
That was a decision made because of a lack of money. It wasn’t the right decision.
In order to make the best decisions for myself and my family, I needed to be in a better financial position.
In order to create the best conditions for me to thrive in, I needed more money than I had at the time.
How many ways can I say this – money makes it easier to be happy.
This is why The Leveraged Mama blog was born. I want to teach you how to create income streams that have great potential, without having to work more. So that ultimately you can make better decisions for yourself and your families.
#3: Why ‘you can do anything’ is not a cliche – it is 100% true!
So we’ve established that being happy AND having money is important to your existence, and why.
Why do we constantly strive for more? Why are we constantly setting the bar higher, every time we reach it? Why are we always reaching for something, just out of reach?
I’m going to try and break down a pretty complex, head-spinning topic into some bite sized, easier to digest pieces.
If there is a purpose in life, it’s to achieve the best that you can. In reaching great heights, you raise everyone else up.
That’s why you are happy when you are winning at life! That’s why you feel great when you reach a big goal. That’s why you have goals.

When life is good, you feel good, and you make others feel good too.
Because when you really break it down, we are all energy. We are all part of the same universal energy and we vibrate at different frequencies, depending on our current state.
Think about it – when you’re around someone who is gloomy, you end up feeling a bit gloomy too. Even if you were feeling great to begin with. Probably, they felt less gloomy after seeing you. Low vibe, high vibe, meeting in the middle somewhat.
In striving to live your best life, you're simply trying to raise your vibration.
You can’t vibrate at a higher level when basic needs are not being met. Every day we are just trying to survive, trying to get out needs met.
You eat when you’re hungry, drink when you’re thirsty, pee, poop and all that is required to get through the day. Thankfully, our incredible brains look after many needs without our needing to think too much about it: breathing, swallowing, avoiding pain, sneezing, farting!
How high your vibration is, and how close you are to ‘self actualisation’ and making the highest contribution you can to the world, and the universal energy, depends on how well those needs are met.
Constantly trying to meet basic needs? Then life is likely to be tough. Because the conditions under which you’re performing are difficult.
You are capable of anything.
Whether you can fully realise what you’re capable of depends on the ‘level’ at which you rise to.
The Enneagram (a personality type indicator) suggests that you can exist at different ‘development levels' throughout your life, according to your dominant personality traits, and the conditions you are existing within.
These levels can change. Right in the middle – where perhaps the majority of people exist – you are ‘average'. But if the conditions are poor enough, for long enough, you’ll drop below average and you’ll start to show this by your behaviours. You won't appear to be ‘at your best’.
However, if the conditions are right for long enough, you'll have the opportunity to to rise ‘above average’ for your type.
Now to the point I’m trying to make:
Just because you haven’t reached the pinnacle of your success just yet, just because you’ve been living an ‘average’ life, that’s just because of the conditions you’ve been existing within.
You can change your conditions so that you can realise your potential.
When I had post natal depression (and it wasn’t the first time I had suffered depression in my life), I did things that I wouldn’t do today!
👻 I ghosted people because I couldn’t deal with fostering friendships.
🤬 I lost my patience with people in a fiery fashion, because I literally did not have enough serotonin in my brain to function normally.
😔 I stopped all my creative pursuits because I felt like I had nothing in me.
😱 I dreaded going to work because I was afraid of being fired for being crap at my job.
I was not at my best!
The conditions I had been operating under, for a sustained period of my life, only allowed me to operate at a certain level.
Something had to change, and you have seen the work I’ve done to improve my financial situation. That was just one area I focused on improving.
I improved my conditions, so now I can start showing up in the world, in a bigger, better way. I'm able to show up and serve YOU because I improved my conditions.
It doesn’t happen quickly. You can’t spend just one day in new circumstances and find your world has improved. It has to be sustained change. Not perfect, just better.
Do that for long enough and your situation will improve.
What I really want to impress upon you is that if you have a dream, it is entirely within your reach.
You can do anything.
What needs aren’t being consistently met right now? Focus on improving them, little by little.
What’s your biggest worry right now? Think of ways you can slowly improve that situation over time.
Work from the bottom of the hierarchy of needs, and once the foundations are firm, it will be easier to reach the top, and truly live the life that’s possible for you.
There are so many ways that you can improve your financial situation without burning yourself out. Creating leverage income streams is how I believe that we can greatly improve our financial outlooks in motherhood.
